Showtime Orders Musical Comedy Pilot 'My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'

Following its pick-up of Cameron Crowe’s music-oriented Roadies, Showtime has given a pilot order to a half-hour comedy from Aline Brosh McKenna titled Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The pilot stars Rachel Bloom as Rebecca, a character who gives up her partnership at a Manhattan law firm as she moves to West Covina, CA.

The project also contains musical elements, an approach to storytelling with which McKenna is familiar. The screenwriter, who made a name for herself with The Devil Wears Prada, also penned the forthcoming feature-length adaptation of the Annie musical.

The pilot is scheduled to be shot this fall in California. It will be executive produced and directed by Marc Webb, whose credits include 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spiderman series.

“This pilot is an exciting change of pace for us. Crazy Ex-girlfriend is built on the inspired comedy and songwriting of Rachel Bloom - who we believe is ready to break out. She was introduced to us by Aline Brosh McKenna, who has a brilliant, contemporary comedy voice that is spot on as showrunner of this project. And, we were lucky to attract director Marc Webb who is eager to flex different creative muscles after his blockbuster successes,” said David Nevens, President, Showtime Networks Inc. in a statement.
