Attention, marketers: Luis Coronel is hot among the nation’s Hispanic youth — at least according to Univision and the Hispanic consumers whose votes helped nominate the Regional Mexican singer.
The Tucson, Ariz.-born 19-year-old cantante received no less than eight nominations for awards to be presented during the July 16 live telecast of the 12th annual Premios Juventud. Among the honors Coronel is up for: “My Favorite Video” and “My Mexican Regional Artist.”
Coronel joins one of the Latin music world’s biggest stars of the moment, Enrique Iglesias, atop the leader board of nominees. Iglesias scored nine nominations, including one representing the voters’ favorite album, “Just Play It All.”
Premios Juventud are perhaps best described as the Latin world’s answer to the MTV Music Awards and MTV Movie Awards. It is fan-driven, with voting open through May 31 at premiosjuventud.com.
Other top nominees for this year’s awards include Regional Mexican group Ariel Camacho y Los Plebes del Rancho, bachata king Romeo Santos, urban artist Nicky Jam, bachatero heartthrob Prince Royce, Cuban singer-songwriter Descemer Bueno, Cuban reggaeton group Gente de Zona and rising Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin (perhaps the most popular recording artist among bicultural Hispanic teens and young adults).
Meanwhile, best-actor nominees include veterans such as Antonio Banderas, Gael García Bernal, Jaime Camil, Mauricio Ochmann and William Levy. At the same time, a mix of Latina actresses are vying for a “She Steals the Show” award, including Aislinn Derbez, Jennifer López, Kate Del Castillo, Salma Hayek and Sofía Vergara.
Nominees for “Favorite Flick” are Addicted; A La Mala;McFarland, USA; Spare Parts; and The Boy Next Door.
