Vanguard Awards: Rob Marcus

Chairman & CEO, Time Warner Cable 5/16/2016 8:00 AM Eastern

Robert D. Marcus has been chairman and CEO of Time Warner Cable since 2014. Previously, he was president and chief operating officer since 2010 and chief financial officer from 2008 to 2011. He was named to the company’s board of directors in 2013.

Honored this year with the Vanguard Award for Distinguished Leadership among men, Marcus is committed to creating a customer-centric organization, with a mission to connect Time Warner Cable’s customers to the world — simply, reliably and with superior service. During his tenure as COO, the company invested to support future growth, enhanced its network and improved critical infrastructure. Residential and business product offerings were expanded, with significantly faster data speeds and advanced multiplatform video products.

“I am proud to accept the Vanguard Award on behalf of the 56,000 men and women of Time Warner Cable,” Marcus said. We’ve been through all sorts of twists and turns over the past few years, but our team has remained focused on doing right by our customers and creating value for our shareholders. For John Keib and I to be honored together as we pass the reins to Charter is a truly fitting acknowledgement of the heroic efforts and achievements of our team. I couldn’t be prouder of all we have accomplished together.”

Marcus orchestrated TWC’s spinoff from Time Warner Inc. in 2009, its move to a publicly traded company in 2007 and several key acquisitions and mergers that expanded the company’s footprint and services. Under his leadership, Time Warner Cable established a disciplined capital allocation strategy that has been emulated by many other S&P 500 companies.

Marcus joined Time Warner Cable in August 2005 as senior executive vice president, overseeing corporate groups including mergers and acquisitions, law, business affairs, programming and human resources. From 1998 until he joined Time Warner Cable, he held various positions at Time Warner Inc., including senior vice president of mergers and acquisitions. From 1990 to 1997, he practiced law at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

Marcus is regularly listed among cable’s most influential executives by Cablefax. In 2010, he was named “Executive of the Year” by the editors of Multichannel News.

Marcus serves on the board of directors of Equifax Inc., as well as the boards of NCTA, CableLabs, the Museum of the Moving Image and New Alternatives for Children, a New York-based nonprofit organization that provides support to families caring for children with special medical needs at home.

Marcus received a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1990, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and an editor of the Columbia Law Review. He earned a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from Brown University in 1987.
