’05 Comes Up Roses for HGTV


HGTV rang in the new year in strong Nielsen fashion.

Led by its live, commercial-free coverage of the 116th Tournament of Roses Parade, the channel averaged a 1.2 household rating and nearly 1.05 million households on New Year’s Day, its best-ever total day performance, according to network officials.

HGTV’s coverage of the Roses Parade scored a 3.1 household average from 11 a.m. (ET) to 1:15 p.m. (ET), which made it the most-watched non-sports basic cable program of the day and the second highest-rated program in HGTV’s history, behind its Jan. 1, 2002 presentation of the Roses parade, which drew a 3.8 household rating.

The net’s coverage of the Roses parade this Jan. 1 was viewed by 2.71 million homes on average, 5% more than the 2.58 million that tuned in the 2003.

The parade aside, HGTV used the first day of 2005 as a showcase for new episodes of existing shows, as well as the premieres of new series, including Design Remix, which scored a 0.99 household rating at 3:30 p.m., and Kitchen Trends, which notched a 0.82 mark at 4:30 p.m.

Elsewhere, Dream House 2005 pulled a 1.32 rating from 7 to 8 p.m., up 10% from its predecessor the year before.

“HGTV’s record-setting start to 2005 comes on top of double-digit growth in primetime among households for the past three consecutive years in both coverage ratings and average impressions,” president Burton Jablin said in a statement. In 2004, HGTV charted a 14% gain in primetime to a 0.9 average from 0.8 in 2003.

Additionally, HGTV executives said the service is the only fully-distributed cable network that increased its primetime rating among women 18-plus for the last three consecutive years.
