Nearly 16% of Broadband ‘Power Users’ Have Connection Speeds of 75 Mbps or Less

Some of the biggest consumers of cable broadband service are still using the industry’s most primitive products.

That’s the takeaway of a data snapshot provided to MCN today by Hoboken, New Jersey-based research company OpenVault, which is looking to drum up a little attention ahead of the company’s appearance next week at the Independent Show in Chicago.

Notably, nearly 16% of cable broadband users who exceeded 1 terabyte of data consumption in June subscribe to a speed tier of 75 Mbps or less. In fact, 5.4% of these “power users” have a speed tier of 20-30 Mbps.

It’s unclear as to how many of those folks are in rural places with limited speed options. But according to an OpenVault spokesperson, it’s probably useful data for cable operators looking to sell 1 Gbps services.

Notably, only around 11% of broadband users exceeding the 1TB cap have 1-gig speed tiers.

Positioned at Booth No. 600 at the Independent Show, OpenVault will show of its "ACS WFi Insider" Wi-Fi visibility product, which was recognized last month as a leading new technology innovation by the Society for Broadband Professionals. In addition, as part of its OV Cares initiative, OpenVault will be collecting unused, travel-sized personal hygiene items from event attendees to benefit Chicago-based Sarah’s Circle, an organization that provides refuge to women who are homeless.
