A Hero's Farewell; A New Era Begins
Cox Communications
Atlanta, GA
After 20 years as President and CEO of Cox Communications and a pioneer in the cable telecommunications industry, beloved Jim Robbins announced his retirement. Pat Esser, our COO, was named his successor. Within a two-week timeframe, the PR team put together a multimonth plan to respectfully bid farewell to Robbins, and simultaneously build enthusiasm and support around Esser. The tactics included employee roasts, celebrations, a hilarious video parody, and videotaped and printed employee tributes for Robbins. Esser launched an internal blog to communicate a “behind-the-scenes” look at his ascent, and he built rapport with employees through a “listening tour.”
