3Com Corp. said it has shipped more than 1.2 million Data Over Cable Service
Interface Specification-based cable-modems, citing orders from domestic
customers such as AT&T Broadband, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision Systems
Corp. and Charter Communications Inc.
Still, a large cable-modem market beckons for 3Com, which is also expanding
its efforts into residential-gateway devices that share broadband connections
via wired and wireless home-networking protocols.
Gartner Group Inc.'s Dataquest Inc. forecast that cable-modem subscribers in
North America will top 16 million by 2004. Faster speeds -- combined with
high-quality streaming audio and video; gaming; and other high-bandwidth content
-- will fuel that growth, senior analyst Patti Reali said in a press
