Swayze, the star of such blockbuster movies as Dirty Dancing and Ghost in the 1980s and 1990s, played tough FBI agent Charles Barker in the freshman A&E series, which ran on the network earlier this year. A&E decided not to go ahead with a second season of the series, which averaged 1.2 million viewers over 12 episodes.
A&E released a statement Monday saying the network is "saddened by the loss of one of our generation's greatest talents and a member of the A&E family. Patrick's work on The Beast was an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his wife, Lisa, and his entire family during this difficult time."
