Airband Airs Wireless Broadband in San Antonio

Airband Communications is now doing business in San Antonio, offering enterprise customers a pre-WiMAX wireless-broadband service right in AT&T’s hometown.

With the San Antonio rollout, Airband claims the largest enterprise fixed-wireless footprint in the United States, including operations in nine markets -- Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Charlotte, N.C.; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; Greensboro, N.C.; Houston; Philadelphia; Phoenix; and Raleigh-Durham, N.C.

The Dallas-based company’s first wireless base station is now up and running in San Antonio, and it will be able to provide coverage for some 5,000 businesses near the city’s Medical Center district. Plans are to expand the proprietary broadband-wireless network to cover the San Antonio airport and downtown area, as well.

The service offers voice-over-Internet-protocol, video, disaster recovery, virtual-private-network security and remote-server applications. The company has already racked up 2,000 business customers, including Continental Airlines, Fujitsu Computer Systems, Smith Barney, The Staubach Co. and WebMD.
