Ali Velshi, whose exit from CNN was just announced this week, is joining Al Jazeera America as host of a half-hour, primetime series focusing on the economy.

The show will be produced out of New York and will start as a weekly with plans to expand to five days a week.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Al Jazeera America, an organization that puts quality, fact-based journalism first,” Velshi said in a release from the network. “It’s a tremendous opportunity and I look forward to taking advantage of the extraordinary U.S. news-gathering capabilities the channel is building and working with such a diverse and talented group of colleagues to tell compelling stories that matter to Americans.”

Al Jazeera America is the new U.S.-targeted network being launched after parent company Al Jazeera purchased cable net Current TV. The network is scheduled to launch later this year.

Before announcing his departure this week, Velshi had been CNN's chief business correspondent and anchor of Your Money as well as World Business Today on CNN International.
