Amazon Studios, the original film and production arm of Amazon.com, said it plans to shoot all “full” original series being teed up for 2014, including comedies and dramas, in the eye-popping 4K format.
Amazon Studios has already revealed plans to debut five new comedy and drama pilots next year, and is asking its customers to help the company determine which ones will become fully-fledged series that will be offered exclusively on its Prime Instant Video and LOVEFiLM (U.K.-only) over-the-top services.
Pilots slated for 2014 include The After (from Chris Carter), Bosch (based on the Harry Bosch book series by Michael Connelly); Mozart in the Jungle (from Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Alex Timbers); The Rebels (from Kevin Iwashina, Jeremy Garelick, Constance Schwartz, Matt Alvarez, and Michael Strahan); and Transparent (from Jill Soloway).
The shows that are then selected to move into full series, along with additional pilots filmed in 2014, will all be filmed in 4K, Amazon said.
"As a premium original content creator, we’re excited about 4K and the future of Ultra HD technology, particularly as we move into drama series next year,” said Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios, in a statement. “All of the pilots and series we produce next year will be shot in 4K. That includes our first ever drama series that we will greenlight next year—we think customers are going to love watching these series in the highest resolution ever available to consumers and we can’t wait to deliver it."
Also on Monday, Amazon introduced a 4K Ultra HDTV Guide, which will features links to Amazon’s selection of 4K TV models and other 4K-compatible devices.
Amazon is the latest OTT provider to come forth with a 4K strategy. Sony has been priming the 4K content pump with a proprietary service called Video Unlimited 4K since early September. Netflix is expected to launch a 4K offering in 1014, and Odemax has been testing a 4K downloading service.
