Columbus, Ohio -- Deployment of digital-subscriber-line
technology is on hold at Ameritech Corp., the telco that is about to be acquired by SBC
Last week, Ameritech released its 1999 capital-spending
plan, which failed to call for aggressive ADSL (asymmetrical DSL) deployments. The company
pegged spending at $3 billion -- about the same as last year.
An Ameritech spokesman said a decision on ADSL will depend
on an upcoming Federal Communications Commission ruling on high-speed service.
"We do have the flexibility to modify our planned
investment if the rules change," said David Onak, a spokesman for Ameritech.
