Announcers Out, Mikes In at NFL Network

NFL Network is going announcer-free, at least for the Aug. 15 preseason clash between the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills.

The National Football League’s cable network said Wednesday that it will put wireless microphones on 16 players and coaches during the game and rely solely on that audio for its Special Edition Game of the Week: Sounds of the Game Sunday, Aug. 22 at 8 p.m. (EST).

The network will wire 12 players, both head coaches and two coordinators.

NBC aired a New York Jets-Miami Dolphins regular-season game without announcers Dec. 20, 1980, but no participants were miked, with the network relying on crowd noise and the public-address announcer.
