Arris RFoG Rolls Into Tennessee

Arris announced that Trinity Communications, a cable operator in South Pittsburgh, Tenn., has launched a triple-play bundle using the vendor's RF over glass (RFoG) solution.

Trinity's all-fiber network in Marion and Sequatchie counties is using the Arris CorWave II multi-wavelength forward transmitters, FTTMax RFoG optical network units at customer premises and TransMax RFoG repeaters for optical amplification. When completed, the operator's deployment will offer digital video, voice and broadband services to approximately 3,000 homes and businesses spanning more than 200 miles of fiber-optic plant.

An RFoG architecture allows a cable operator to deliver RF-based services over a fiber-to-the-premises network, using their existing headend infrastructure, provisioning systems and customer-premises equipment. RFoG can be a cost-effective solution for low-density areas because of reduced outside plant maintenance and lower-power consumption.

"We selected the Arris CorWave and RFoG solutions because of their proven reliability, and to meet our capital and operational budgetary needs," Trinity Communications president James Gee said in a statement. "In our system, population density is low and spread out so the RFoG cost model and return on investment is very attractive to us. Once the backbone is in place, we can simply drop a fiber to the residential or small business customer, install the RFoG ONU and they're set."
