Liberty Global Inc. said Friday that its UPC Romania SA subsidiary completed its acquisition of 100% of Romanian broadband-telecommunications operator Astral Telecom SA.
The purchase price for the operator -- which serves approximately 890,000 video, voice and data revenue-generating units -- was approximately $407 million, Liberty Global said.
UPC Romania already served some 390,000 RGUs in Romania.
“Astral has a major presence in the Romanian capital city of Bucharest, and it has upgraded over 50% of its network to support advanced broadband voice and data services,” Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries said in a prepared statement.
“Romania is now one of our largest markets in central and Eastern Europe, and we expect it to rapidly develop as one of our showcase operations,” he added.
