Aurora Debuts New Ethernet Transport

Aurora Networks Inc. is debuting its new Ethernet transport system for cable operators, which, it said, will allow MSOs to better target home offices and small to midsized businesses for high-speed-data and telephony applications.

The transport system offers 1.6 gigabits per second bandwidth per wavelength, which can be extended further by using dense-wave-division multiplexing. The transport would allow MSOs to provide voice, video and data services; virtual local-area networks; virtual private networks; and leased-line replacements.

Aurora said its transport offers latency under one millisecond -- good enough for Internet-protocol-telephony services.

The system includes an "NI3000" network-interface module, which interfaces with MAN/WAN (metro-area network/wide-area network) routers and switches and manages the transport network.

The "OE1110" Ethernet-access device for business premises interfaces with office LAN switches and routers. The system also includes "Opti-Trace Monitoring and Management" software.

Aurora said the product allows for flexible bandwidth allocation between business Ethernet traffic and residential-subscriber RF traffic.
