BBC America Cops an 'Edgar'

New York -- An episode of BBC America drama Seaof Souls won an “Edgar Award” Thursday night from the Mystery Writers of America as "Best Television Episode Teleplay" at a ceremony here, topping another BBCA show and two CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episodes, including one with a story by Quentin Tarantino.

The episode of the supernatural-tinged series was entitled “Amulet,” and it was written by Ed Whitmore, who was on hand to attend at a ceremony at the Grand Hyatt with his wife, Tracey, in for the occasion from their home in London. Whitmore praised network officials, his wife and others in an impromptu and heartfelt acceptance speech.

Other nominees in the category were two CSI episodes, including “Grave Danger,” the Tarantino story; a Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode called "911"; and a BBCA Wire in the Blood episode called "Redemption."

In fine Golden Globes fashion, Whitmore had to make his way back to his table early (from a bathroom visit) as his category moved up due to a mechanical malfunction in the video presentations. He didn’t have a speech ready when he came back, but he made do nicely anyway and celebrated afterward.

Other Edgar winners Thursday included Stephen Gaghan, who accepted an award for his Syriana screenplay, and John Feinstein, who won in the best young adult (targeted) category for Last Shot: A Final Four Mystery.
