Sunday's BET Awards 14 was a big hit for the network, averaging 7.9 million viewers, the network announced Monday.

The live show, which was hosted by comedian Chris Rock and featured performances by Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Lil Wayne, Lionel Richie and August Alsina, bested the 7.7 million viewers garnered by last year's BET Awards telecast, said network officials.

The show was also a social media hit, generating 11 million tweets, up more than one million tweets from last year's show. The show drew more tweets than such shows as the Billboard Music Awards, The Golden Globes and The People's Choice Awards, according to BET.

In addition, the network's three-day The BET Experience at L.A. LIVE event leading up to the BET Awards drew 112,488 attendees, up 10% from last year. The event featured concert performances, music, film screenings and a Sprite Celebrity Basketball Game, said network officials.
