Bravo Pitches 'Queer Eye’ With W Hotels DVD Set
New York — Bravo has reached a deal with W Hotels to market the upcoming season launch of its Queer Eye for the Straight Guy series.
Guests at W Hotels in at least 10 major markets will receive a two-disc DVD set that contains advice from the Queer Eye cast on style, in addition to outtakes, bloopers and music.
The promotion, scheduled through March, will visit W Hotels in New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Seattle, Atlanta, San Diego and Honolulu.
The new season of Queer Eye is scheduled to launch Dec. 6, with the premiere installment and three subsequent episodes centering on wedding preparation.
A Bravo spokeswoman said a few W Hotels will host screenings for guests of the premiere episode in November, including its venues in Chicago and San Francisco.
More Consumers Cut Cord On Their Landline Phones
Scottsdale, Ariz. — The number of consumers cutting the cord on their landline phone services from regional phone companies and relying solely on wireless phone carriers continues to increase, according to a new survey fromIn-Stat.
The research firm said that 9.4% of U.S. consumers use wireless phones as their primary phone. That number will jump to between 23% and 37% by 2009, according to In-Stat, which is owned by Multichannel News parent Reed Elsevier.
The study found that the consumers most likely to consider replacing their landline phone with a mobile phone service are those who are already heavy wireless users. “Demographics do not offer much insight into the likelihood of wireless substitution,” In-Stat said.
MTV Hypes Shakira For Sony, BMG
New York —MTV International signed a broad marketing and advertising agreement with Sony, BMG and Epic Records to promote the upcoming release of pop star Shakira’s CD, “Oral Fixation Vol. 2.”
The Viacom Inc.-owned music programmer’s international channels will run four 30-minute shows involving Shakira, and offer Web surfers full-length streams of songs from the CD. MTV will also release a series of Shakira “mobisodes” for mobile-phone users
In November, MTV International channels will run a two-hour programming block that includes a 30-minute MTV Live performance from Shakira; an All Eyes on Shakira program, in which other artists ask her questions; a Making of the Video program about her “Don’t Bother” single; and a Diary of Shakira show, which tracks her MTV appearances.
Internet Protocol Phone Poised for Big Growth
New York — By 2010, 20.4 million U.S. households will subscribe to a voice-over-Internet protocol phone service, up from 1.2 million in 2004, according to Jupiter Research.
A new research report predicts that cable operators are well positioned to “dominate” VoIP phone services, according to the company.
“Both cable operators and startups are marketing services, which continue to increase consumer awareness,” Jupiter research director Joe Laszlo said. “While providers face regulatory and competitive challenges, the message of cheaper, more feature-rich phone service is attracting consumers.”
