Broadcom Corp. is introducing its “BCM3349,” a new single-chip cable-modem product designed for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification 2.0 modems.
The company said it is in production for both the chip and the “BCM3419” silicon tuner that is going into DOCSIS 2.0 modems. Production volumes will be available later this quarter, the vendor added.
Broadcom said the new chip sets will allow modems to operate 25% faster than current modems due to a new 250 MIPS (million instructions per second) processor. Operators would be able to offer 40 megabits per second downstream and 30 mbps upstream.
