The state-of-the-art theater at The Cable Center in Denver soon will bear John Malone's name.
The Cable Center said it has received a $1 million personal donation in honor of John Malone to name the 200-seat facility the John Malone Theater at The Cable Center. Funding for the naming gift came from Liberty Global president and CEO Mike Fries, Liberty Media president and CEO Greg Maffei, and Discovery Communications president and CEO David Zaslav.
The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 7. The theater, equipped with outstanding acoustic and lightning and advanced video capabilities, houses myriad presentations, screenings, panel discussions and lectures.
The three executives presented the gift in honor of Malone and his contributions to the cable industry. Malone has been at the forefront of the cable industry since 1973, when he joined Tele-Communications Inc. as president and CEO. In 1999, he forged one of the largest transactions in U.S. corporate history by merging TCI with AT&T Corp. Malone, a member of the Cable Hall of Fame since 1999, has served as the chairman of Liberty Media since 1990, and chairman of Liberty Global since 2005. He currently serves on the board of CATO Institute, Expedia, Inc., Discovery., and SiriusXM, and is chairman emeritus of the board for Cable Television Laboratories.
"The naming of this theater in honor of John Malone is a small token of our appreciation for all that he has done for us in our careers, as well as for the industry as a whole," said Fries, Maffei and Zaslav in a statement. "Over 40 years, John has played a leading role in building the infrastructure, programming services and companies that today deliver television and high-speed Internet to the majority of Americans, and an increasing proportion of European consumers. Without John Malone, there would be no cable industry as we know it, and we are forever in debt to his vision, perseverance and dedication."
Noted Larry Satkowiak, president and CEO of The Cable Center: "We are extremely appreciative to Mike, Greg and David for this generous gift, and thrilled to dedicate the John Malone Theater at The Cable Center. John Malone has helped to build cable into the thriving, innovative and intriguing industry it is today, and we are pleased to be able to honor him with this special recognition."
