Cable Ops Run PSAs Soliciting Disaster Relief Contributions

Cable operators have committed $200,000 in screen time to transmit public service announcements to solicit support for the Texas Disaster Relief Fund.

Comcast Corp., Charter Communications Inc., Cable One, Suddenlink Communications and Time Warner Cable are among the companies that will run the PSA, announced by Texas Gov. Rick Perry. (To view the PSA, click here.)

The fund, donations to which are tax-deductible, was established in 2005 to help local governments and victims cope with the impact from Hurricane Rita. The funds are distributed both to local governments and to individual victims of the Hurricane Ike disaster.

According to the governor's office, the fund already has $4 million, half of which has been donated by the oil industry.

The Texas Association of Broadcasters is also working to line up donated time from its members.
