Cable reclaimed its market-share lead in high-speed-data-subscriber additions in the third quarter, according to Leichtman Research Group Inc., grabbing 1.28 million of the 2.3 million new broadband customers in the quarter.
The 55%-45% spread reversed the second-quarter stats, in which digital subscriber line had pulled slightly ahead.
Overall, LRG said, there are 18.8 million cable-modem subscribers in the United States, compared with 12.2 million DSL subscribers.
Comcast Corp. accounted for 43% of all of cable's net adds in the quarter with 549,000.
LRG said that between Sept. 30, 2003-Sept. 30, 2004, cable and DSL added 8.3 million broadband subscribers, a record for any one-year period.
