Cable Show 2012: CableNET Touches Tablets, Gateways and Power Savings

CableLabs has brought its CableNET technology showcase to the 2012 Cable Show for the 20th time, providing a broad smorgasbord of demos highlighting the industry's latest innovations.

This year's CableNET includes multiscreen video apps and solutions, intelligent gateways, advanced-advertising systems and power-efficient set-top boxes.
The CableNET exhibit, presented by CableLabs in association with the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, features 34 companies exhibiting a range of technology solutions.
"Once again, CableNET promises to introduce and illuminate cutting-edge technologies that show tremendous promise for advancing cable-powered services, products and applications," CableLabs president and CEO Paul Liao said.
CableLabs is reprising the CableNext Showcase in the exhibit area, with a wall showing off cable operators' latest offerings that deliver TV programming to consumer electronics devices, including tablets and smart TVs.
The R&D consortium also has an area demonstrating the CableLabs-Energy Labs solutions that can put set-tops into a "light sleep" mode to use as much as 30% less power than conventional devices. Several major U.S. MSOs expect to debut "light-sleep" set-tops later in 2012. The energy-efficiency showcase also will include a demo of Comcast's Xfinity Home service, which lets subscribers control thermostat settings and lights in their homes, and low-power digital transport adapters.
"CableNET is meant to highlight emerging technologies, but what's interesting is they're not only emerging - they're becoming more real," Liao said.
Liao also called out an "augmented reality" demo that CableLabs is staging with San Francisco-based Metaio. Users hold up a smartphone or tablet, and the Metaio app provides additional information about an object in the viewfinder. "It's an example of a partnership we've developed through our Silicon Valley office," which opened last year Liao said.
CableLabs is currently scouting for a new CEO, having enlisted a Silicon Valley executive recruiting firm for the search. Liao told the consortium he would not seek to renew his contract, which expires in December.
The 11,400-square-foot exhibit is situated next to NCTA's Imagine Park showcase, featuring live presentations, demos and other events. CableLabs issued a request for proposals to vendors to participate; a fee is required to be part of the CableNET exhibit.
"CableNET shines the spotlight on emerging technologies that represent the cable industry's pioneering vision to deliver an unparalleled communications and entertainment experience," NCTA president and CEO Michael Powell said in a statement. "It's a compelling affirmation of our industry's penchant for innovation and a must-see showcase for all who attend The Cable Show."
The CableNET exhibit will include a total of 39 demonstrations featured across four themed areas: gateways, advertising, multiple screens and a catch-all category dubbed "innovation in action."
