Cable Show 2013: Nagra Pitches Cloud-Based UI

HTML5-Based OpenTV 5 Is Device-Agnostic

Washington -- Multiscreen software and video security firm Nagra is showing off OpenTV 5, a cloud-based user interface that can run on a variety of set-tops and other types of video devices.

OpenTV 5 integrates the company’s MediaLive Multiscreen platform, which features a services component for managing accounts, users, devices and business models, as well as MediaAccess PRM, the company’s studio-approved digital rights management system, and the MediaLive player. The system also bakes in Nagra’s MediaLive Client Framework, a system designed to accelerate the deployment and portability of HTML5-based apps across different devices, including set-tops.

Nagra said its approach enables service providers to develop customized user interfaces in the cloud, create a unified experience across any device, and make changes and implement upgrades more rapidly using architectures that pack most of the smarts in the device. .

OpenTV 5, which relies on HTML5, can also enable service providers to offer traditional broadcast TV services alongside over-the-top applications, the vendor said.

Nagra is showing off OpenTV 5 here in the CableNET exhibit.
