Orlando -- Imagine Communications is rolling out a multiscreen video-transcoding platform that it claims sets a new bar for high density, with the ability to pump out 1,280 HD (or up to 2,560 standard-definition) video streams in a 4-rack-unit high system.

The system, dubbed “next: Dense Multiscreen Transcoding,” provides full redundancy and consumes less than 2 watts per HD profile, the company said. The next: platform also provides integrated packaging and HTTP streaming support for multiscreen adaptive bit rate (ABR) applications.

The next: transcoders, alternatively available in a 2U server or 10U blade system, use a hybrid hardware/software system transcoding architecture. The system provides unlimited video and audio streams per ABR group, according to Imagine, and can deliver any resolution up to 1080p60 HD.

“Through an intelligent re-use of Imagine software modules and an active strategic partner program, the next: platform enables a new and unique set of solutions for both multicast and unicast services,” Imagine founder and CTO Ron Gutman said in a statement.

Privately held Imagine Communications is based in San Diego, Calif., with R&D in Israel.
