CableLabs Spawns DOCSIS Specs For EPON


CableLabs is releasing specifications that will let cable operators use DOCSIS back-office systems to provision and operate Ethernet-based passive optical networks for business services.
The industry R&D consortium said Time Warner Cable, Comcast and Bright House Networks were strong supporters of the initiative along with several suppliers. "We are accelerating finalization of this first set of specifications for DPoE," CableLabs vice president of business services Glenn Russell said.
The DOCSIS Provisioning Over Ethernet Passive Optical Network (DPoE) specs will give MSOs a common method of using DOCSIS back-office specifications and service concepts to provision and operate EPON-based products when delivering IP and Ethernet services.
"The DPoE specification effort capitalizes on cable operators' existing back-office infrastructure, provisioning and operational processes from the DOCSIS network, offering a much higher level of service velocity and scaling of commercial services over IEEE standards-based EPON while making an efficient use of outside plant fiber assets," Comcast director of network architecture and engineering Shamim Akhtar said in a statement.
CableLabs and the MSOs worked with several vendors to develop the spec, including; Broadcom, Hitachi-CTA, ZTE  and Finisar (formerly Broadway Networks).
In future versions of the DPoE spec, CableLabs hopes to add additional features and functionality to support of a greater variety of data and voice services in the commercial space.
