Cablevision Systems launched an online-backup service for its broadband customers that offers free storage for up to 2 Gigabytes of files.
The Optimum Online Backup service, which works with both Macs and PCs, also provides an "unlimited" option currently available for a discounted rate of $44.95 per year. Cablevision is providing the service via Carbonite, a Boston-based provider of online backup services that backs up more than 100 million files per day.
"Optimum Online Backup is more robust and a better value than other backup programs offered by other Internet providers in our market, and we expect this new offering to become an important and popular resource for our customers," said Amalia O'Sullivan, Cablevision's vice president of consumer product management.
Cablevision's online backup service can be configured to automatically upload files. The service encrypts documents and other files before they're transmitted to Carbonite.
