Cablevision Systems Corp. said it will give 1,000 gallons of gasoline to the winner of a sweepstakes promotion it is running for its “Optimum Autos” classified service.

Digital-cable customers can enter the sweepstakes through the end of June by filling out an entry form with their remote controls on channel 605, or by Web surfing to the Optimum Autos site (optimumautos.com).

The promotion will give Cablevision and its automobile advertisers sales leads. Subscribers who enter are required to supply their full name, date of birth, mailing address and primary e-mail address. Cablevision said the sweepstakes is only open to people 18 or older who are legal residents of New York, New Jersey or Connecticut.

A random winner will be selected July 1. Cablevision didn’t say in the sweepstakes announcement how the gasoline prize will be delivered, and representatives didn’t immediately return calls.

Courting customers with gasoline is a new endeavor for the cable sector. But with fuel prices reaching record levels, some grocery stores and retailers have used free gasoline in incentive programs.
