Cablevision to Pay N.J. Rebates

Cablevision Systems Corp. must pay consumers in 11 New Jersey communities, including Newark and Bergen County, $1.31 million in rebates to satisfy a rate order by the state Board of Public Utilities.

Consumers in Allamuchy, Bayonne, Bergen, Hamilton, Morris, Montague, Newark, Oakland, Paterson, Raritan Valley and Rockland-Montvale will see their rates lowered through Jan. 31, 2002.

The rollback resolves a dispute between Cablevision and regulators, which judged that the operator's maximum permitted basic rate, set by federal law, was too high.

Additionally, customers in Montague will get a one-time credit totaling $20,742. State officials said the company charged equipment and installation rates that were not "reasonable." Those rebates must appear on customers' bills by the end of March.

The state had questioned 14 of Cablevision's FCC rate filings. This rebate order resolves all those challenges, according to the state department.
