Calif. TV Tax Vetoed

California Gov. Gray Davis has vetoed a bill that would have added $10 to
every television or computer component sold in the state in order to fund
hazardous-waste recycling.

The governor told the legislature he wants to challenge the electronics
industry to devise recycling and source reduction of electronic waste, rather
than creating a bureaucracy that would add 64 people to the government when the
administration is actually trying to pare public jobs.

Davis' action was lauded by the Consumer Electronics Association and the
Electronic Industries Alliance.

The trade groups said the fee scheme would have unfairly burdened
California-based manufacturers over Internet-based hardware sellers. They added
that they are committed to finding a national solution to electronics
recycling.
