Canal Plus, UMG Get Jiggy With It

Santa Monica, Calif.

Universal Music Group

has tapped

Plus U.S. Technologies

to help it develop premium music programming for the "MediaHighway" set-top-box middleware platform.

Initially, Canal Plus will port UMG's
The Viewing Lounge
, a show that enables interactive-television viewers to customize blocks of music-video programming from bands and artists such as U2, The Wallflowers and Eminem.

Such a partnership was expected, considering Vivendi S.A.'s pending purchase of Universal Studios owner The Seagram Co. Ltd. and its move to boost ownership in Canal Plus.

"This initiative illustrates our corporate strategy of enabling interactive television through premium content offerings in the United States," Canal Plus U.S. Technologies CEO Jean-Marc Racine said in a press release.
