While the cable industry convenes in San Francisco, Cartoon Network was making news across the Pacific.
At the 2005 Tokyo Anime Fair today (Monday), the animated network unveiled IGPX, the first original series for its Toonami anime block. Cartoon has partnered with Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell, anime sequences in Kill Bill Vol. 1) and Bandai Entertainment animation and computer-generated imaging, which will debut this fall.
IGPX (Immortal Grand Prix) is set in 2048, when the “IGPX” has become the world’s most-popular sport — so big that an entire city was built for the racing industry, where competitions take place on a huge, 60-mile track called “The Big Eye.”
Cartoon Network, which announced the addition of IGPX during its upfront presentation to advertisers in February, first partnered with Production I.G. to produce a quintet of five-minute episodes of the show for an on-air Toonami event on the series, melding both traditional in 2003.
