The competition for eyeballs was tight in basic cable during the first week
of the May ratings period, as Cartoon Network and Lifetime Television tied for
the top spot in primetime.
Both the animated Turner network and the distaff-skewing channel averaged a
1.7 during primetime from April 30 through May 6, according to a Turner
Entertainment Research analysis of Nielsen Media Research data.
Turner Network Television was third at a 1.6, followed by USA Network at a
1.4. TBS Superstation and Nickelodeon were knotted for fifth, each with a 1.4,
while Discovery Channel, A&E Network and FX were next, all averaging a 1.1
for the week. TNN: The National Network completed basic cable's top 10 with a
On a total-day basis, Nickelodeon remained the leader with a 1.3, besting
Cartoon and Lifetime, which each finished at a 1.1. TBS ranked fourth at a 0.9,
ahead of TNT and A&E, which tied for fifth with 0.8 averages, according to
the Turner analysis.
USA was seventh at a 0.8, while The History Channel and FX finished in eighth
with a 0.6 apiece. There was a logjam for the 10th spot among
Discovery, ESPN, MTV: Music Television and The Learning Channel, all bunched at
a 0.5 average.
Boosted by National Basketball Association first-round playoff action between
the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks; the Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks; and
the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, TNT and TBS were at the top of the
Nielsen scoreboard with adults 18 through 49 and 25 through 54.
TNT reached 1.02 million viewers 18 through 49 and 991,000 among the
25-through-54 set, while TBS delivered 739,000 and 752,000 of the respective
demos. Lifetime, USA and FX ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively, among
both of those key audience groups.
Averaging a 5.2 April 30 from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., World Wrestling Federation
Entertainment Inc. fare on TNN was the highest-rated show on basic cable last
week, beating the first hour of grappling that night, which posted a 4.7
FX's coverage of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing's Pontiac
Excitement 400 May 5 generated a 4.0 to finish third.
