Cartoon Network announced Monday that with the National Basketball
Association's All-Star Game being slated for Atlanta in February, it will join
with three NBA advertiser partners -- The Quaker Oats Co.'s Gatorade, The LEGO
Group and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox -- for an on-air and online programming event
and sweepstakes promotion.
Cartoon, also based in Atlanta, will feature six NBA stars Feb. 9 introducing
their favorite "animation all-stars" during a special mini-marathon from noon to
6 p.m. That stunt will lead up to the NBA All-Star Game's tipoff on sister
network Turner Network Television.
Shaquille O'Neal, Stephon Marbury, Jason Kidd and Allan Houston will be among
the players participating in the animation all-stars interstitials, according to
Cartoon senior vice president of promotions marketing Phyllis Ehrlich.
Ehrlich said in a prepared statement, "Cartoon Network saw the perfect
opportunity to hop on the promotional bandwagon with a fully integrated campaign
targeted to sports enthusiasts of all ages."
The grand prize in the "Cartoon Network/NBA All-Star Sweepstakes" will be a
trip for four to the All-Star Weekend (Feb. 6 through 9). And 400 first-prize
winners will get prize packages containing NBA merchandise from the league's
three advertiser partners.
In another facet of the NBA All-Star linkup, Cartoon will sponsor various
games and activities within its own themed area of the NBA All-Star Jam Session
at Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center.
