CEA: Piracy Bills Too Vague

The Consumer Electronics Association resumed fighting anti-piracy bills
pending in state legislatures, calling them overbroad and ambiguous.

The CEA said the bills are so broad that a consumer could be prosecuted for
hooking up a digital-video-recorder device, such as those distributed by TiVo
Inc., to a set-top if the local operator has an exclusive deal with another DVR
vendor.

The bills could also have a chilling effect on consumer-electronics sales,
the CEA argued.
