Charter Sued Over Data Patent

Charter Communications Inc. is facing a patent-infringement lawsuit.

Fort Worth, Texas-based Hybrid Patents Inc. said Monday that it has filed a lawsuit against the MSO in the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, “demanding compensation for the infringement of four key patents relating to the upstream and downstream transmission of data over cable networks.”

Hybrid said the patents, issued from 1996-2000, “cover methods of transmitting packetized data downstream to multiple client devices while simultaneously providing the return of information upstream from the client devices, and a hybrid transmission system to send and receive high-speed digital information in the form of variable-length packets.”

The company is seeking compensation for past damages -- including a reasonable royalty, treble damages and court costs -- as well as an injunction enjoining the MSO from infringing these patents in the future without paying due compensation.
