Councils in two Chicago suburbs have approved a ballot measure that will
gauge citizen support for a tricity municipal-cable overbuild.
City councils in Geneva and St. Charles, Ill., voted Jan. 21 to place the
issue on the ballot next April.
The third city, Batavia, scheduled a special meeting on the topic for Jan.
27. Assistant city manager Randy Recklaus noted that six of the councilmembers
are also on the cable committee that recommended that the full City Council
approve an election.
"I expect passage," he added.
Voters will decide whether their respective cities should be part of a
three-city consortium building a $62 million telecommunications plant, using
some infrastructure from the local electric utilities.
If the telecommunications project is approved, it would operate in
competition with Comcast Corp.
