Cable subscribers have purchased 25,000 plug-and-play digital-TV sets that can display cable programming, including HDTV, without set-top boxes, Comcast Corp. told the Federal Communications Commission Wednesday.

Comcast reported that 12,000 of its customers have CableCARD-enabled digital-TV sets provided by 14 companies that are marketing 161 different CableCARD products.

In a Feb. 9 meeting with FCC officials, Comcast senior vice president of strategic planning Mark Coblitz urged the agency to eliminate or postpone the July 2006 ban on cable-operator deployment of set-tops that do not include CableCARD slots.

Last week, Comcast announced that it had deployed 1 million HDTV-capable set-tops, adding 800,000 in 2004 alone.
