Microsoft Corp. said Comcast Corp. has extended an earlier agreement to deploy its “Microsoft TV Foundation Edition” product, committing to rolling out the 1.7 version of the software to up to 5 million customers.
Comcast also created a joint venture with Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. to create an interactive program guide.
"We’re very impressed with the Microsoft software platform and its ability to enhance and promote video-on-demand, as well as its capability to launch other interactive services,” Comcast Cable Communications Inc. president Steve Burke said in a prepared statement.
Foundation Edition is designed to work across a range of set-top boxes, from currently deployed base digital models to set-tops with digital-video-recorder, HDTV and VOD capabilities. The software supports Motorola Broadband Communications Sector’s new dual-tuner HDTV “DCT-6412” set-top.
“Comcast’s significant commitment to Microsoft TV Foundation is a very powerful stamp of approval," Moshe Lichtman, corporate vice president of the Microsoft TV division, said in a prepared statement.
