Comcast Completes DOCSIS 3.1 Rollout in Houston

Comcast has completed the rollout of 1-Gig (downstream) service delivered via DOCSIS 3.1 to residential and business customers in the Greater Houston area.

The expansion in Houston follows recent D3.1 launches in markets such as Sacramento, Calif.,

Comcast ended 2017 with about 80% of its footprint upgraded to D3.1, and plans to complete the rollout by the end of 2018. Examples of Comcast markets where DOCSIS 3.1 launches are still upcoming include Vermont; Carmel, N.Y.; Scranton, Pa., Central Pennsylvania; and West Virginia.

In Houston, similar to other D3.1 Comcast markets, the MSO is selling residential 1 Gig (paired with an upstream that maxes at 35 Mbps) for $159.95 per month without a contract and, for a limited time, is offering it to new high-speed internet subscribers for $89.99 per month, with a one-year agreement. Pricing for current customers with a contract will vary, Comcast noted.

For D3.1, Comcast is supporting service with its own xFi Advanced Gateway (formerly called the XB6) as well as approved D3.1 devices available for retail sale from Arris (Surfboard 8200), Netgear (CM1000 modem and C7800 wireless gateway), and Zoom/Motorola (MB8600 modem).
