Comcast said it has wrapped up the nationwide rollout of Xfinity Mobile across the MSO’s service footprint.
The service, launched in May, relies on Comcast’s MVNO deal with Verizon and on the MSO’s network of 18 million WiFi hotspots, comprised of a mix of access points deployed in metro areas, in business locations and inside customer gateways (sometimes called “homespots”).
Early on, Comcast is offering two Xfinity Mobile plans – unlimited data for $45 per month per line (for up to five lines), and a By the Gig option for $12 per GB of shared cellular data across all lines on an account each month.
Comcast, which is selling Xfinity Mobile at its newly redesigned retail stores at online, reiterated that most customers are buying the By the Gig plan. Comcast also lets families mix and match those options, and said nearly 25% of Xfinity Mobile accounts have at least one line using By the Gig and one line using the Unlimited option.
Comcast hasn’t disclosed sub numbers for Xfinity Mobile, but the service is “operationally scaling well” and the company is “really pleased with the early results,” Dave Watson, Comcast Cable’s president and CEO, said on the company’s Q2 call.
"We created a unique mobile experience that’s simple and saves customers money by connecting to our nationwide Wi-Fi network, and allows them to only pay for the data they use,” Greg Butz, president of Xfinity Mobile, said in a statement. “Now that we’re available across all of our distribution platforms, including our retail locations in all of our markets, we look forward to introducing even more customers to Xfinity Mobile.”
Xfinity Mobile curerntly works with Apple smartphones such as the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE, as well as several Samsung devices Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S7 edge), and the LG X Charge. Comcast said it plans to support a bring-your-own-device policy soon.
