Foundry Networks Inc. said Comcast Corp.'s system in Portland, Ore., is purchasing its "Metro Ethernet" technology to connect area city and county government agencies.

Foundry said Comcast plans to use its "FastIron" layer 2/3 switches, "NetIron" metro routers and "FastIron Edge" switches to connect hundreds of government buildings, including offices, schools, universities, libraries and police and fire departments.

The technology will allow Comcast to offer voice over Internet protocol, remote training and storage transfer and diskless cluster computing.
