Comcast Corp. raised basic-cable prices as much as 14.6% in 67 of the 170 southeast Michigan communities it serves, while WideOpenWest LLC increased basic rates by up to 6.6% for all of its 550,000 Detroit-area households, AP reported.

Comcast officials said the hikes were made to cover the costs of investments the company has made in its Michigan operations in order to improve its network and expand programming, AP said.

WOW said it raised its rates in all of the 42 communities it serves to cover increasing business costs, AP added.

It was the first rate increase in about one year for both cable providers, The Detroit News reported in a Tuesday story.
