Comcast's X1 Platform Expands to 27 Markets

Comcast has deployed its IP-capable X1 platform to a total of 27 markets, including 15 in July alone, as the MSO moves ahead with a plan to roll out its next-gen video platform to all its markets before the end of the year.

Comcast has rolled out X1 to more than half its footprint so far. X1 features a cloud-based interface, supports third-party apps from Facebook and Pandora, sports and weather widgets, and a voice-controlled search app that’s currently offered on the iPhone. Comcast Labs has also developed a “Send to TV” app that, while still technically a “beta” product, supports some of the sorts of Web video capabilities that are available with the new Google Chromecast device.  More detail about the MSO's Send to TV app is available here (subscription required).

Comcast is currently targeting X1 primarily to new triple play customers. The MSO has not yet revealed how many of its 21.77 million video subs are on the platform. The MSO is preparing to rollout X2, a system upgrade that will offer more personalization, extend the cloud UI to devices other than set-tops, including tablets, smartphones and PCs, and set the table for an in-home TV streaming and cloud DVR service.
