Concurrent Slings VOD to Internet TVs

Video-on-demand systems and software vendor Concurrent has extended its MediaHawk VX video delivery software to deliver VOD to Internet-connected TVs, including those from Sony, Samsung, Phillips, LG, Panasonic and Toshiba.

The Duluth, Ga.-based company said it has been “working closely with a major European operator,”which it declined to identify, to deploy VOD to smart TVs. In January 2012, Concurrent announced a deal with Polish cable operator Vectra to deploy MediaHawk VX for multiscreen-video services.

“After purchasing a new smart TV and connecting it to the Internet, it is critically important for consumers to be able to access cable- and telco-based video service offerings right alongside those available from over-the-top suppliers,” Erik Weston, director of product line management for Concurrent, said in a statement. “We remain committed to providing solutions that keep our customers at the forefront of the industry and giving them the opportunity to compete on any screen using the core investments they make in our technology.”

In addition to QAM-based VOD delivery, the MediaHawk VX platform supports various IP video streaming formats including Integrated RTSP streaming, HTTP progressive download, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, Adobe Flash and Apple HTTP adaptive bit-rate streaming.
