The broadcasting and cable industries need to unite behind an effort to tone
down programming heavy in adult language and sexual innuendo, Federal
Communications Commission member Michael Copps said Wednesday.

'I want radio to be there, I want television to be there, I want cable to be
there,' said Copps, the FCC's lone Democrat. 'I want them to recognize that
there is a problem.'

Copps -- who declined to name specific shows that cause him problems -- said
he wants the industries to act on their own, without government interference, to
craft some standards that would curb indecent programming.

'Talk radio is a problem for me. Primetime television is a problem for me,'
he said. 'The whole thing is just a great race to the bottom that's getting
worse every day.'
