Cox Buys More Digital Gear

ATLANTA - Cox Communications Inc.
said it plans to buy at least 240,000 "Explorer 2100" advanced set-tops this year from Scientific-Atlanta Inc. The companies declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal.

Cox has already deployed its digital boxes in many of its larger markets, including Phoenix, Ariz.; San Diego, Calif.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Fairfax, Va.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; and Walton Beach and Pensacola, Fla. Cox also buys set-tops from Motorola Broadband Communications Sector and Pioneer New Media Technologies.

Earlier this month, Cox said it plans to add 1.1 million new service revenue-generating units (digital video, phone and/or high-speed data customers). The MSO had 842,000 digital subscribers as of Dec. 31, 2000.

S-A's 2100 box, which started to ship in the second half of 2000, features a 130 megahertz processor and can handle multiple applications, such as electronic mail and video-on-demand.
