Cox Communications Inc. is teaming up with Motorola Inc. in San Diego to bring wireless cable modems to students in the Lemon Grove (Calif.) school district.

Motorola is supplying its "SBG1000" wireless-cable-modem-gateway product, which includes a modem, an Ethernet router, a wireless-access point, a print server and an advanced firewall.

Cox is installing the gateway product in the homes of two sixth-grade classes in a virtual private network that connects students, teachers and the school district. Users can tap into the network from school, home or multiple community-access points. Students and teachers will receive a wireless thin-client tablet that runs Microsoft Corp.’s "Windows CE .NET."
