Cox Communications Inc. has upped its fiber optic diet, buying additional
capacity from Level 3 Communications Inc. for its nationwide broadband
network.

Level 3 will provide Cox with 2.5-gigabit optical-wavelength capacity on a
route that stretches from Rhode Island to California and links the cities of
Omaha, Neb., and Las Vegas.

Level 3 will also supply optical routes connecting San Diego to Phoenix and
Dallas to New Orleans.

The deal expands on an existing pact Cox has with Level 3 for fiber optic
capacity used in its nationwide data backbone. Cox also has deals with AT&T
Corp. for backbone capacity.

"Level 3 has proven to be a stable, reliable network-services provider that
has a history of exceeding our expectations," said Dick Mueller, Cox's vice
president of network planning, engineering and operations.

"As a result, Level 3 has become a seamless and integral part of our
business, as well as an important extension of our own network," he
added.
